Forestry in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), known as “The Way of the Forester,” is a social-focused expansion to the core Woodcutting skill. Introduced in two phases in 2023, this expansion emphasizes collaborative gameplay, new events, and economic enhancements within the game.
Core Gameplay Changes
Forestry introduces significant alterations to Woodcutting. Players chopping the same tree receive a cumulative Woodcutting bonus, and trees now deplete on a timer rather than randomly. These changes affect most trees, except for those in the Woodcutting Guild or grown via Farming.
Forestry Kit
Players begin their Forestry journey with a forestry kit, obtained for free, which stores necessary tools, resources, and gear. This includes the anima-infused bark (the reward currency), various attachments and offerings to enhance Woodcutting, and items that enable specific Forestry events.
Forestry Events
These events spawn while collecting logs, offering diverse activities and rewards. Events may occur naturally or require specific items from a player’s forestry kit. The type of tree and number of players chopping it influence the likelihood of an event spawning.
Specific Events and Mechanics:
- Rising Roots: Choppable roots appear around trees, offering Woodcutting experience and anima-infused bark. An anima-infused root eventually emerges, providing greater rewards
- Struggling Sapling: Players create mulch from various resources to help a sapling grow, gaining experience and bark based on the nutritional value of the mulch used
- Flowering Bush: Requires a bee on a stick for optimal participation. Players pollinate bushes, gaining experience and bark, with rewards scaling based on the amount of pollination.
- Woodcutting Leprechaun: Allows players to bank logs and other items. Standing on the End of Rainbows during this event increases experience gained from Woodcutting.
- Beehive: Building bee hives offers Construction experience and bark. Players can obtain sturdy beehive parts for use in player-owned houses.
- Friendly Ent: Involves pruning entlings based on their requests, providing Woodcutting experience, bark, and additional rewards for satisfying all entlings.
- Poachers: Disarming traps set by poachers grants Hunter experience and bark, with a chance to receive a fox whistle for pet transformation.
- Enchantment Ritual: Assisting a Dryad in a magical ritual, players block ritual circles for experience and bark rewards, with a chance to obtain a petal garland.
- Pheasant Control: Stealing eggs from pheasant nests grants Thieving and Woodcutting experience and bark, with a chance to receive pheasant tail feathers for crafting a costume.
Strategies and Rewards
Players are advised to participate in certain events for optimal bark gain. Teleporting to events and utilizing specific items can enhance the Forestry experience. The anima-infused bark can be spent at the Forestry Shop for various items, such as the lumberjack outfit, felling axes, and event-enabling items.
Recent Updates and Bug Fixes
Recent updates have addressed bugs, added new events, improved existing ones, and introduced additional rewards in the Forestry Shop. These changes aim to enhance the player experience in Forestry-related activities.
